Geophysical detection and structural characterization of discontinuities in rock slopes

چکیده
The stability of a potentially unstable rock mass strongly depends on the discontinuity pattern and the face topography. Basic geological analysis could provide useful structural information but suffers from the lack of information on discontinuities at depth. Of major importance is the persistence of discontinuities inside the mass. Several geophysical methods (seismic, electric and electromagnetic) are available to address this problem, differing in sensitivity, resolution and depth penetration. The purpose of the chapter is to present the common structural and geophysical methods for characterizing the rock mass. Section 2 is dedicated to a review of the main geophysical parameters and the properties of the main geophysical methods, as well as their possibilities and limitations for discontinuity detection and characterization. In section 3, applications of the aforementioned methods are shown for three limestone cliff sites located around Grenoble (French Alps), exhibiting different geometrical and geotechnical features. ha l-0 06 63 97 1, v er si on 1 27 J an 2 01 2 Author manuscript, published in "Rockfall Engineering (2011) 38" ha l-0 06 63 97 1, v er si on 1 27 J an 2 01 2 Author manuscript, published in "Rockfall Engineering (2011) 1-

A field investigation of application of digital terrestrial photogrammetry to characterize geometric properties of discontinuities in open-pit slopes
In order to analyze the slope stability in open-pit mines, the structural parameters of rock mass such as persistence and spatial orientation of discontinuities are characterized through field surveys, which involve spending high costs and times as well as posing high risks of rock toppling and rock fall. In the present work, a new application of terrestrial digital photogrammetry is introduced...
متن کاملRock mass structural data analysis using image processing techniques (Case study: Choghart iron ore mine northern slopes)
Presence of joints and fractures in rocks strongly influences the behavior of the rock mass by dividing the media into smaller units. These structures intensify the potential instability besides the development of sliding and rotational movements. The assumption of discontinuum media changes the whole analysis conditions in relation to the continuum analysis. Acquisition of geometrical and stru...
متن کاملIntegrated geophysical surveys to assess the structural conditions of a karstic cave of archaeological importance
An integrated geophysical survey using both the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and groundpenetrating radar (GPR) methods was undertaken over a cave of great archaeological interest in southern Italy. The survey was performed to assess the stability of the carbonate rock roof of the cave. A geophysical survey was preferred to boreholes and geotechnical tests, in order to avoid the risk ...
متن کاملSubsurface structural characterization of the Chooman Dam site using geoelectric method
A recent evaluation of Chooman Dam highlighted the potential for dam failure due to either seepage or an earthquake on nearby faults. Unfortunately, this dam suffers from infiltration or leakage problems related mainly to different geological and tectonic factors. In response to these concerns, electrical resistivity surveys employing vertical electric sounding (VES) method were carried out at ...
متن کاملRock mass structural characterization via short-range digital photogrammetry
Because of the important role of rock mass structural properties on its mechanical behavior, determining the qualitative and quantitative properties of has been a subject of intense research. In this regard, numerous techniques such as scanline surveying, cell mapping, and geologic structure mapping have been proposed. However, applying such field surveying techniques for rock mass properties i...
